Background & Aim: Caring for patients with tracheostomy requires high self-efficacy and self-confidence. Since post-discharge training methods do not seem to be sufficient in this field, the present study was conducted to detemine the effect of training with participatory approach on coping self-efficacy and self-confidence of patients with tracheostomy
Materials & Methods: This research is a quasi-experimental study of two groups before and after. The study sample consisted of 76 caregivers of patients with tracheostomy who were available in the study and were randomly divided into two groups of 38 patients. A questionnaire was used in three sections of demographic, coping self-efficacy and self-confidence. The intervention group was trained in a participatory manner and the control group received conventional training during hospital discharge. The questionnaires were completed again after six weeks and the data were analyzed by SPSS software version 22.
Results: The results showed that in the control group, there was no statistically significant difference in the mean score of self-efficacy before and after training, but in the experimental group, after training, this mean was significantly higher than the score before training (P = 0.0001). The self-esteem score was significantly different in the control and test groups. (P=0/048). In the experimental group, the mean score of self-confidence before and after training was significantly different (P = 0.0001).
Conclusion: Considering that the mean scores of self-efficacy and self-confidence were significantly increased due to participatory training, so it is recommended to use this method in training caregivers of patients with tracheostomy.
