Background & Aim: The problems in the field of emotions of sexually abused women and the problems of sexual performance that most of these women face in life, highlight the need for research and increased attention to this field. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of emotion-focused approach and compassion-based therapy on cognitive regulation of emotion and sexual performance in women with experience of child sexual abuse.
Materials & Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, the statistical population included all women with experience of child sexual abuse who referred to counseling and psychotherapy centers in Tehran in 2024. Among them, 60 women were selected through purposive sampling and randomly assigned to two intervention groups and a control group (20 people in each group). The cognitive emotion regulation questionnaire of Granievski and Kraij, 2006 and the index of women's sexual performance of Rosen et al. (1997) were used to collect data. Intervention sessions for both experimental groups were implemented in the form of 8 sessions, 2 sessions per week and each session lasted 90 minutes, and the control group was placed on the waiting list. Analysis of covariance and variance and t-test were used to analyze the research data.
Result: The results indicated that there was a significant difference between the emotion-focused therapy group and the compassion-based therapy group and the control group in the post-test of the cognitive emotion regulation variable (P=0.000, F=55.9), sexual performance (P=0.000, F=8.67). Also, the effect size for the cognitive emotion regulation variable and sexual performance in the experimental group and the control group was 83.8% and 44.5%, respectively.
Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that compassion-based therapy and emotion-focused therapy are appropriate approaches to improve sexual function and emotional regulation in women with experience of child sexual abuse and can be a suitable guideline for use in counseling and psychotherapy centers.
