Background: Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are largely preventable, and understanding their epidemiological patterns can contribute to more effective prevention and management. This study investigated the epidemiological characteristics of TBI among patients presenting to the trauma center of eastern Golestan Province, Iran, in 2024.
Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study included all patients with head trauma who presented to Shahid Motahari Hospital, the trauma center of eastern Golestan Province, in 2024. Data were obtained from medical records, the hospital information system (HIS), radiological reports, and brain computed tomography (CT) images retrieved from the PACS. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22 with descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation.
Results: The highest proportion of patients were aged 10–19 years, and 68.4% were male. More than half were single and lived in rural areas. Based on the Glasgow Coma Scale, 95% of injuries were classified as mild. Most incidents occurred between 18:00 and 24:00, with the highest seasonal occurrence in spring (17.40%). The main causes of injury were traffic accidents (16.44%), falls (34.76%), interpersonal violence (10.83%), and impact with heavy objects (10.26%). Approximately 85% of brain CT scans were normal. Associated injuries included facial trauma (20.5%) and multiple trauma (26.2%), while 35.6% had no associated injuries. The most common symptoms were scalp/head wounds (17.1%), headache (11.1%), and vomiting (11.4%). Overall, 96.6% of patients were discharged with relative recovery.
Conclusion: The incidence of head trauma in eastern Golestan Province was 702 cases per 100,000 population. Traffic accidents, falls, and interpersonal violence were major causes, highlighting the need for comprehensive preventive strategies, environmental safety measures, and greater public awareness.
