Background & Aim: Being a professional is one of the fundamental concepts of nursing and care, and professional self-understanding is the first important step toward acting morally in a profession. This study aimed to explore the perspective of students of emergency care regarding the professionalism concept.
Materials & Methods: This qualitative research was performed on 10 students of emergency care. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews until reaching data saturation. The interviews were transcribed and their texts were evaluated several times, followed by coding and classification of the contexts by content analysis method.
Results: Data analysis led to the extraction of three main categories (definition of professionalism, the importance of professionalism and characteristics of professionals) and 15 subcategories (social benefits, peace, justice, a necessity for medical emergency, reduced errors, safety observance, improvement of quality, doing the tasks accurately, accountability, taking the patient’s situation into account, accurate performing of procedures, up-to-date and sufficient knowledge, proper communication, management, and a good mood).
Conclusion: The themes revealed based on the results of the present study demonstrated students’ meticulous attention to the topic of professionalism. These individuals had reached important perceptions in this regard despite a lack of specialized study or specific training in this area, which was considerable.
