Background & Aim: Epidemiological studies play a crucial role in identifying key factors that aid in developing preventive, therapeutic, and follow-up guidelines. These studies help uncover the nature of diseases, their unknown aspects, and strategies to combat them. The present study aimed to analyze the epidemiology of all patients hospitalized with a diagnosis of COVID-19 at Khoei Hospital, Khoy University of Medical Sciences.
Materials & Methods: This retrospective epidemiological study was conducted in 2024 by reviewing the hospital information system and medical records of all patients hospitalized with a COVID-19 diagnosis from 2019 to 2021. Data was collected using a researcher-developed checklist based on the patients' registered information. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics with SPSS software (version 16).
Results: The mean age of the patients was 54.05 ± 18.73 years. The average hospital stay was six days, with a recovery rate of 93.2% and a readmission rate of 11.8%. Among the patients, 22.7% had a history of contact with COVID-19 cases, and 59.1% presented with symptoms and a positive COVID-19 test. The most common clinical manifestations were cough (50.8%) and respiratory distress (49.1%). Lung scans revealed pulmonary involvement in 74.5% of patients. The primary treatment protocol for 86.7% of the patients involved oxygen therapy.
Conclusion: Timely prognostication, public awareness, cultural promotion, and early screening, particularly during disease outbreaks, are critical in managing patient care. These measures are especially vital for elderly patients with underlying conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, who are at higher risk of severe outcomes.
