Background & Aim: Several factors affect the quality of life and self-efficacy of patients with atrial fibrillation. The Leventhal model is effective in understanding and recognizing the patient and leads to adaptive behaviors to cope with the disease. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of the Leventhal self-regulation model based on telenursing on the quality of life and self-efficacy of patients with atrial fibrillation.
Materials & Methods: This clinical trial study was conducted on 60 patients with atrial fibrillation in 2022 at Kashani Hospital, Shahrekord. The samples were randomly divided into two intervention groups (30 people) and control groups (30 people). In the intervention group, in addition to the usual measures, two 4-hour virtual training workshop sessions were held for patients, focusing on the cognitive domains (identity, cause, timeline, consequence, control, and treatment) discussed in Leventhal's self-regulation model through multimedia software (sound, film, image, and animation). Also, telephone intervention was conducted for 1 month by the researcher. In the control group, only routine interventions were performed. 1 month after the intervention, the patients' quality of life and self-efficacy were measured using questionnaires. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics and with the help of SPSS 21 software at a significance level of less than 0.05.
Results: The mean scores of quality of life and self-efficacy between the intervention and control groups before the study were not statistically significantly different (p=0.43) and (p=0.44), respectively, while after the intervention, the mean scores of quality of life and self-efficacy in the intervention group increased significantly compared to the control group (p≤0.001).
Conclusion: Leventhal's self-regulation model has led to improved quality of life and self-efficacy in atrial fibrillation patients. Therefore, it is recommended that educational interventions be implemented to improve these two components in patients with atrial fibrillation.
