Background & Aim: The prevalence of elder abuse in Iran is higher than in other countries in the world, and perhaps the high prevalence of elder abuse cannot be attributed solely to the severity of this phenomenon, because this issue is one of the social problems in society that is undoubtedly affected by various and diverse factors. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of family elder abuse and its related causes in community health centers in Sanandaj city in 2024.
Materials & Methods: This is a cross-sectional (descriptive analytical) study. The statistical population in this study included all elderly people living in Sanandaj city. The sample size was 419 people who were selected by simple random method. The data collection method was a questionnaire that was completed by interview method. Chi-square, t-test and one-way analysis of variance tests were used to analyze the data in SPSS version 23 software.
Results: In this study, 60.6% of the elderly have been subjected to psychological abuse. 76.1% have been deprived of authority, 10% have been physically abused, 44.6% have been financially abused, 22.4% have been abandoned, 51.6% have been neglected, 17.9% have been emotionally neglected, 78.5% have been financially neglected, and finally 91.9% have experienced one or more types of violence. 74.8% have been abused by a child and 21.7% was done by the spouse.
Conclusion: The results of this study indicate the fact that violence against the elderly is done for various reasons. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the level of awareness of individuals, expand the culture of dialogue and negotiation within the family, and by reducing conflict in the family and managing it, as well as by carrying out educational measures, violent behaviors of the family and those around them can be corrected and eliminated as much as possible.
