Background & Aim: Postpartum pain is one of the most common causes for the usage of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in women with multiple births. The study has been conducted to compare the effect of fennel capsules and ibuprofen pills after pain due to the tendency of most people to use complementary medicine, especially herbal medicines and the need for an effective and safe method in breastfeeding mothers.
Materials & Methods: The study was a clinical trial performed on 70 eligible mothers hospitalized in the postpartum ward of Be’sat Hospital in Sanandaj. In the current research, participants were randomly divided into two groups of fennel capsule users (n= 35) and ibuprofen tablets (n = 35) and were given fennel capsules or Ibuprofen tablets every 4-6 hours according to the group. Pain intensity before and one hour after each intervention has been measured using a visual pain scale and finally, data were collected and analyzed using SPSS software version 16.
Results: There was no statistically significant difference in pain intensity between the two groups before the intervention. Fennel capsules and ibuprofen tablets significantly reduced the severity of after pain; however, the effectiveness of these two drugs in reducing the severity of pain was not statistically significant.
Conclusion: According to the results, fennel can be used as an herbal remedy for pain, instead of non-steroidal analgesics to reduce postpartum pain.
