Background & Aim: Spinal cord injuries cause many physical and psychological complications for patients and lead to a decrease in their psychological well-being and quality of life. These patients require psychological interventions in addition to medical treatments to overcome these problems. This study investigated the effect of empowerment-based education and treatment improves psychological well-being and quality of life in patients with spinal cord injury.
Materials &Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted among 246 patients with spinal cord injuries at the Bandar Abbas Spinal Cord Injury Association between 2023 and 2024. Patients were included through a convenience sampling method and completed a quality-of-life questionnaire. A total of 30 patients who scored below 95 were randomly assigned to three groups of 10: two intervention groups and one control group. After grouping, all patients completed the Riff Psychological Well-Being Questionnaire. The first intervention group received acceptance and commitment therapy, the second group underwent psychological empowerment training, and the control group did not receive any treatment. One month after the intervention, patients in all three groups completed the quality of life and psychological well-being questionnaires again. The data were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and ANCOVA to compare the outcomes (significance level: 0.5).
Results: Per-intervention mean quality of life scores ranged were 76 to 78 in the three groups. Post-intervention, quality of life scores significantly improved in intervention groups 1 (83.4) and 2 (82.1) compared to the control group (76.5) (p = 0.001). Pre-intervention, mean well-being scores were 62-64 in the three groups. Post-intervention, control group well-being was 62.9, while intervention groups one and two scored 76.41 and 82.1 (p = 0.001).
Conclusion: Acceptance and commitment therapy and psychological empowerment training lead to improved quality of life and psychological well-being of patients with spinal cord injury.
